Overview

Navigation menus are the helpful links you see across your website that make it easy for visitors to explore different sections and find what they need.

Unlike pages, navigation links don’t appear automatically; you’ll need to create your page first, then add a link to it through the admin area.

🤓Tip: Managing your navigation helps keep your site organised and ensures that important content is always easy to find.

Key Benefits

  • User-Friendly Experience: Helps visitors easily explore and navigate your site.

  • Content Visibility: Ensures important pages are easily accessible.

  • Multi-language Support: Create custom menus for different language versions of your site.

  • Flexible Link Options: Add internal pages, external URLs, or category headings.

What is a Navigation Menu?

A navigation is a set of links, such as Home, About, or Jobs, that help users browse your website.

Common places where navigation links appear:

  • Top menu (desktop)

  • Burger menu (mobile)

  • Footer menu (bottom of every page)

🤓Tip: After creating a new page, remember to add it to your navigation, so users can access it easily.

Add a Link to the Navigation

Follow these steps to add a navigation link:

  1. Log in to Volcanic as an Admin.

  2. Click the Settings tab.

  3. Click Navigations (under Site).

  4. Find the menu you want to update and click Edit. For example: main-nav (top menu).

  5. Click the green + New button.

  6. Enter a Name for the link (e.g., "Contact").

  7. Select a Page Type:

    • Internal Page: Select an existing (non-hidden) custom page.

    • External Page: Enter a full URL. Use # to create a non-clickable heading.

  8. (Optional) Select New Window if you want the link to open in a new browser tab.

  9. If your site is multilingual, select the correct Language tab.

  10. Click Submit.

🤓 Tip: You can easily drag and drop your navigation links to rearrange them or create dropdown menus for better organisation.

📌 Note: Navigation menus may vary by site. If you're unsure, simply compare the admin link list to your live site’s menu to find the right one.

Multiple Language Navigation

If your website supports multiple languages:

  1. Click Settings, then select Site.

  2. Click Navigation.

  3. Select the correct Language tab (e.g., English, Spanish).

  4. Add or update links separately for each language.

🤓 Tip: This ensures that all users see accurate navigation in their selected language.

FAQs

Q1: What’s the difference between a page and a navigation link?

  • Answer: A page is the content you create; a navigation link connects that page to your site's menus.

Q2: I created a page, but it’s not showing on the menu. Why?

  • Answer: Pages must be manually linked to the navigation menu after creation.

Q3: Can I edit navigation links from Edit Mode?

  • Answer: No. Navigation changes must be made in the admin area:

  1. Click Settings, then select Site.

  2. Click Navigation.

Q4: Can I add a parent menu item with no link?

  • Answer: Yes. Create an External Page and enter # as the URL.

Q5: Why don’t I see my page in the internal page dropdown?

  • Answer: Only published, non-hidden pages appear in the internal page list.

Q6: Do I need to recreate navigation for each language?

  • Answer: Yes. Each language requires its own set of navigation links.

Q7: Can I link to an external site or job board?

  • Answer: Yes. Use the External Page option and paste in the full URL.

Q8: How do I know which navigation to edit if my site has multiple menus?

  • Answer: Navigation menus can vary between websites. If you're unsure which one to edit:

    • Open the navigation list in your admin area.

    • Compare the list of links with what you see live on your website.

    • The set of links that match the live site usually indicates the correct navigation to update.
